Uterine Fibroids

Diagnosis

Evaluation for uterine fibroids usually begins with an evaluation by your primary care doctor or OB/GYN. A physical exam and annual PAP smear are usually part of this evaluation. If fibroids are suspected, women will typically undergo an ultrasound as part of the initial evaluation process to confirm the presence of fibroids and to determine the size and number of fibroids present.  If minimally invasive treatment by an Interventional Radiologist is being considered, a MRI is often obtained to determine if the fibroids can be treated with embolization. A MRI can also help determine if there are alternate causes for patient symptoms and to help decide which treatments are best suited for each patient.
