Computed Tomography
Angiography (CTA)
CT scanners provide a more detailed examination of vascular structures than does ultrasound but use radiation to create the images. CT Angiography (CTA) is very effective and commonly used for cardiac imaging, imaging the blood vessels of the neck and brain, the aorta, abdomen blood vessels and lower-extremity arteries. In fact, a CTA exam can be tailored to examine almost any artery in the body. X-Ray contrast is injected intravenously and CT images are taken while the contrast is circulating through the vessels of interest. CTA exams provide radiologists with very high resolution 3D images which can be very helpful for treatment planning. Your doctor may order a blood test to insure that the kidneys are functioning properly and able to tolerate the X-ray contrast prior to your CTA.
